چکیده
Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) is a non-invasive form of allergic sinusitis, resulting from the IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to fungal antigen in atopic individuals. It was first described in 1983 by Katzenstein.1 It usually follows a slow, non-aggressive course, and a wide variety of fungal agents have been implicated, with the vast majority belonging to the Dematiaceae family, such as Bipolaris spicifera or Curvularia lunata, or to the Aspergillus family, such as A. fumigatus, A. flavus, or A. niger.2,3 AFS can present with a continuum of symptoms, ranging from simple nasal obstruction to diplopia, facial deformity, osteolytic destruction, and involvement of the skull base.4 CT scan of these patients is always abnormal, and evidencing bone erosion, chronic rhino sinusitis, and central areas of hyper-attenuation

Diagnosis of Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis
Background: Allergic fungal sinusitis is a non-invasive disease, and accounts for approximately 6-8% of all chronic sinusitis requiring surgical intervention. As the treatment and prognosis of these disorders vary significantly, it is extremely important to recognize allergic fugal sinusitis and differentiate it from chronic sinusitis of bacterial and fungal origin. This prospective study evalu...
متن کاملALLERGIC FUNGAL SINUSITIS AMONG CANDIDATES FOR FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY (FESS) IN SARI (IRAN)
Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) has been clinicopathologically defined as a noninvasive form of fungal infection. This study was designed to distinguish AFS among patients with chronic sinusitis who failed to respond to repeated courses of antibiotics and were therefore candidates for functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in Sari. Allergic mucin and sinus lavage was collected during F...

Vol. 10 No. 1, January-March 2008 5 Introduction Allergic fungal sinusitis is a benign noninvasive sinus disease, believed to be an allergic reaction to aerosolized environmental fungi. It has been almost three decades when in 1976 Safirstein noted that the combination of polyposis, crust formation and sinus cultures yielding aspergillus was similar to the constellation of findings observed in ...
متن کاملMolecular Identification of Schizophyllum commune as a Cause of Allergic Fungal Sinusitis
Schizophyllum commune, a basidiomycetous fungus, rarely causes disease in humans. We report a rare case of allergic fungal sinusitis caused by S. commune in a 14-yr-old girl. The patient presented with nasal obstruction and a purulent nasal discharge. Materials obtained during endoscopic surgery of the frontal recess revealed allergic mucin and a few fungal hyphae. A potato dextrose agar (PDA) ...
متن کاملVisual loss in the setting of allergic fungal sinusitis: pathophysiology and outcome.
OBJECTIVE To hypothesise the probable pathophysiological mechanism responsible for visual loss in allergic fungal sinusitis, other than direct compression. DESIGN Retrospective, non-randomised case series. Out of 274 cases of allergic fungal sinusitis, four cases with sudden visual loss were enrolled into the study. The fourth case had visual loss on the contralateral side to bony erosion of ...
